Saving One Million Lives for Results

Saving One Million Lives is a Federal Ministry of Health initiative launched in 2012 in a response to poor health outcomes in the country particularly women and children.

In a need to accelerate implementation of Saving One Million Lives (SOML) initiative, it was repackaged and rebranded in 2015 to Saving One Million Lives Performance for Results (SOML PforR) following a $500 million International Development Association (IDA) credit from World Bank.

States are the greatest beneficiaries of the programme receiving up to 82% of the $500Million with an initial grant of $1.5Million to each State and funding for subsequent years based on disbursement linked indicators (MLI’s)  SOML PforR focuses on six (6) important aspects (pillars) of Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) namely; (1) Improving Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, (2)Improving routine Immunization coverage and achieving Polio Eradication, (3) Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV, (4) Scaling up access to essential drugs and commodities, (5) Malaria Control and (6) Improving Child Nutrition.

The program is the first Program for Results (PforR) in Nigeria, providing an opportunity to boldly address governance and management issues towards ensuring, greater focus on results; increased accountability; improved measurement; and encouragement of innovation.

Bayelsa State under the astute leadership of His Excellency, Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson, the Governor of Bayelsa State, mechanism have been put in place to ensure maximum and strict utilization of funds, focusing on results and outcomes. This is reflected in the detailed and well laid-out SOML PforR Implementation Workplan that addresses all bottle-necks to ensure efficient Healthcare services delivery in the Six Thematic areas of the Program and further introduce initiatives for Quick Wins of create a direct and massive impact on the people of Bayelsa State especially Mother and Children.

The Gov. Dickson’s Safe delivery Project, Gov. Dickson’s Children Eye Care Project, Gov. Dickson’s Award for best Performing Primary HealthCare and the One Functional Primary HealthCare Centre per ward Strategy are all being rolled out in the Bayelsa State Saving One Million Lives Program for Results (SOML  PforR) to achieve maximal gains and reposition the Health Sector in the involvement partners will remain the backbone of the SOML PforR.

I implore all Implementation and Development Partners, Community leaders, Opinion leaders and all relevant stakeholders to contribute to successful implementation of the Bayelsa State Saving One Million Lives Program for Results (SOML PforR).
